A series of anguished letters written by Princess Diana in which she reveals her torment over her ‘desperate and ugly’ divorce have sold for over £170,000.
The Kassems say that owning the poignant documents was a responsibility they did not wish to pass on to their children or grandchildren and sold them at auction in individual lots.
The two page letter on Kensington Palace headed notepaper sold for a hammer price of £26,000 – a record for a Princess Diana letter. ‘If I’d known a year ago what I’d experience going through this divorce I never would have consented. It’s desperate and ugly.”Another piece of correspondence in which Diana apologised to the couple for cancelling a trip to the opera due to the stress of the divorce was having on her sold for £15,000.In contrast, a charming letter she wrote after her divorce had gone through in which she wrote of how she was ‘more than happy to have my freedom’ sold for £5,000.
