Bashir Ahmed, 69, died at Best One on Main Street in Newtongrange at around 7pm on Friday. His death is being treated as unexplained.
Police have revealed that a disturbance happened at a store in Midlothian before the shopkeeper was found dead within.
The girl has been has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal and Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration following the incident. She has not been reported in connection with Bashir's death and was not arrested. MSP Bryan Pottinger for Midlothian East said: "I have known this well-respected trader for many years.
He added: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of Bash and anyone affected in the community."
