An MP has said it's time to do away with the October change back to GMT, saying it would have a number of benefits
Ministers have been urged to ditch the October clock change to avoid "plunging the UK into darkness and misery" by mid-afternoon. Conservative former minister Sir Greg Knight argued his proposal would reduce road accidents, boost tourism and cut energy use.
Clocks in the UK go back one hour at 2am on the last Sunday in October, with the next change on October 29. Clocks go forward one hour at 1am on the last Sunday in March to provide more daylight in the evenings during what is known as British Summer Time. Sir Greg, MP for East Yorkshire, told the House of Commons: "In little over a month's time, we will go through the unnecessary and archaic ritual of putting our clocks back, thereby plunging the UK into darkness and misery by mid-afternoon for a period of several months.
Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt replied: "He will know that this House has under recent administrations debated these sorts of issues. But I shall certainly make sure that the relevant department has heard his interest and he will know how to apply for a debate in the usual way."
