‘DJs would laugh when I requested Abba’: Mark Gatiss and Ian Hallard on their new play, The Way Old Friends Do Markgatiss is directing a new Abba-inspired play, written by his husband IanHallard. They talk about why love for the supergroup endures
. “With Abba, there is always a tangible sense of pleasure and gratitude in the air. Thank Christ for Abba. That should be on the poster for our play.”
Just why, then – almost half a century after they burst into our consciousness sporting sparkly powder-blue jumpsuits and matching skull-caps and won the Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo” – do the band remain so invincibly popular? If you look back through history, Gatiss says, “you will find writers and artists and musicians who should be more popular than they are. But an awful lot of the time, the people who have lasted are ‘the real thing’.
On Hallard’s 18th birthday, he resorted to bringing his own seven-inch vinyl singles with him to his party, “because the DJ didn’t have any Abba. That was the only way I could be sure they’d get played. I told him, ‘We’re paying you, so tonight you’re going to play these songs!’” And then there’s “Waterloo”, one line of which Hallard’s friend is always quoting: “How can I ever refuse? I feel like I win when I lose.” “He says that couplet encapsulates his entire love life. Even something as apparently simple as that has great power.”The Way Old Friends Do
