I said, surprised at the quickness with which the demand toppled out of my mouth. “I want to be valuedseen as a sexual being. I text a friend of mine I’ve always thought was hot to invite him to the pub and when he says, “Shall we see if Niall’s around?” I say, “Naa let’s just keep it as us two”, because I’ve decided to stop playing that role, the one that makes everyone else feel comfortable. He looks good when he arrives. I like the way his hair flops over his face so it’s harder to see what he’s thinking.
And once we’ve left the pub, I text that friend who slept in my bed that night, asking: “Do you reckon I should pursue things or not?”, “Should I have brought him back? Or is it good that we waited?” shoving him into that same box he put me in, not ever thinking to ask how it feels.
