This desire is not something you should fight, this is not something you should feel guilt for, this – this yearning for treats – is something you should savour as a delicious and important part of a good life. Pleasure is as good a reason for living as any other. Better than most, I’d argue.
While I am very much of the “have a little chocolate as a reward for literally 15 minutes work” school of thought, the best treat I’ve granted myself in recent years has been the hire of a bouncy castle. I had absolutely no idea how much this would cost. They could have quoted me £10,000, and I would have sagely nodded. But no. To hire a bouncy castle for a day costs in the region of £65.
