A doctor has warned that the vertical ridges which often develop on nails could be a cause for concern. Whilst many believe the ridges to be a simple sign of ageing, one expert says they could be a cause for greater concern.
Dr Ross Perry from the skin clinic chain Cosmedics says they could even indicate a vitamin deficiency or dehydration or as a result of a skin condition, the Daily Star reports. He said: "Nutritional factors such as deficiencies in vitamins such as Vitamin A, or if your body is low in protein or calcium then you may notice ridges."
The NHS website adds: "Nail problems are not usually caused by anything serious. Common nail problems include brittle, loose nails that may change colour or shape."Experts say it is important to seek medical attention if you experience any changes to your fingernails. In particular, doctors say people should watch out for changes in shape, changes in colour or nails falling off.
It is also recommended that people should see a GP if "the skin around [the] nails has become sore, red, swollen and warm , which can be a sign of an infection or ingrown toenail." People should also see a podiatrist if their nails are too tough to cut, with further information available on the NHS website.
