It took just a few minutes for Niamh Williams to go from perfectly healthy to critically ill
Nine-year-old Niamh Williams, from North Wales, became critically ill within minutes of being admitted to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in West Derby. The symptoms of Niamh Williams' illness began in October 2021, when she complained of severe abdominal pain and swelling. After vomiting "uncontrollably" and becoming increasingly unresponsive, Niamh from was taken to Wrexham's Maelor Hospital by ambulance.
Soon after, she was transferred to Alder Hey Children's Hospital where her parents were told to prepare for the worst. But after almost two years, Niamh's condition has improved but she still needs Total Parenteral Nutrition through a tube that goes directly into her veins. “We would also like to thank the North West Transport Service team for safely transferring Niamh to Alder Hey Intensive Care Unit and to the ongoing teams from both Betsi Cadwaladr and Alder Hey that make it possible for us to manage Niamh’s condition at home.
