British volunteers helping the war effort in Ukraine are braving relentless Russian shelling as winter sets in

Operating in temperatures as low as -7°C, the frozen ground has made probing for mines even more perilous for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists British volunteers who have spent months on the frontline in Ukraine say that there has been no let up in the relentless Russian shelling, which continues “all day and all night” on the battlefield.

“We’ve had the car damaged. We’ve had one of the Ukrainian soldiers, who had his car completely wiped out. “Not what you want to be dealing with when they are chucking artillery and mortars at you. However, the threat to Ukrainian positions was too much to just leave it there,” he posted on Instagram.

“Casualties sometimes have to be carried out by hand and supplies are having to be resupplied on foot,” he said. The frozen ground has made probing for mines even more perilous for the Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialists, who are operating near the frontline Fellow Brit and former paratrooper Daniel Burke has also described enduring “terrifying” shelling during the battle to liberate Kherson.

Mr Burke, 35, from Wythenshawe, Manchester, described how he and fellow Western fighters cheated death after a Russian missile strike on their unit’s base in July, suffering a shrapnel wound to his foot after a salvo of around 40 missiles.: “One of our operations was to go across the Inhulets river and start taking a few of the smaller towns and villages.

His team would creep towards enemy lines, using drones to map routes for tanks and armoured vehicles to advance on Russian positions, with some missions lasting several days. “And most people there at the moment, they are ex-special forces or something along those lines. Nobody likes fighting in the winter, so its only the hardcore ones who are left.”
