Guy Curtis was diagnosed with underlying leukaemia hours before he passed away at Royal Blackburn Hospital
A dog-loving Accrington dad passed away in A&E after falling and hitting his head at home, an inquest has heard.
However, scans at Royal Blackburn Hospital revealed Mr Curtis had ‘significant bleeding’ on his brain. The neurological department at Royal Preston Hospital was immediately contacted.Following further tests, showing a very high white blood cell count, it was decided that surgery would not benefit Mr Curtis owing to a diagnosis of leukaemia.
She said: ”We are aware he was taking blood thinners - we found them in his home. All we know is that he went to the doctors and was waiting to see a heart specialist and was taking blood thinners. The doctor apologised and quietly replied that clinical staff were not responsible for where patients were placed, adding: “I apologise that that’s where Mr Curtis passed away… movement of patients and where they are does not fall under clinicians' remit; I can only apologise that he died in the emergency department. Ideally, he would have died in a ward but unfortunately, that would not have been in our power.
He continued: “It all starts from the fall - there’s nothing to suggest that there’s anything other than an accident. Realistically, the only conclusion I can return is one of accidental death.
