They say council workers are only cutting round the edges of grass

Dog walkers have hit out at West Lothian Council for failing to cut down long grass, saying they’re being put at risk of tick bites and Lyme disease.

They said despite complaints to council, workers only cut round the edges, leaving the rest to grow long.Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system. “One of the dog walkers approached me and showed me picture on his phone of the tick and the bite. He frequently walks his dog in the park so it couldn’t have come from anywhere else. He got in touch with council last week due to length of grass.A West Lothian Council spokesperson said a survey conducted last year indicated many people prefer grassy areas to remain ‘natural’.

“We did this following feedback from the public, with the majority of respondents to a survey carried out in 2021 indicating they would like us to take a flexible approach to grass cutting, ensuring that paths and access is maintained while allowing the rest of the grass to grow naturally.
