While the prospect of victory and glory is tantalising to every fan, the losses are so much more frequent and irresistible. And then there’s Dortmund…Contrary to what certain popular podcast hosts might insist, life isn’t about winning. It certainly isn’t about world-class basics taking you to the summit of an ever-rising metaphorical mountain. If it were, through this lens life would be deemed meaningless for the vast majority of us.
It is Dortmund coach Edin Terzic bowing down to the Yellow Wall in tears after the final whistle, but also bowing down to the unstoppable power of the universe, knowing he had been beaten, emphatically, and in the cruellest way conceivable – to be defeated by yourself at the death. As Thom Yorke would say, you do it to yourself and that’s what really hurts; of course I’m a Radiohead fan, I’m writing about pain and why we should embrace it.
Losing is such an integral part of life that we barely even notice it. But when we witness losing as epic as Dortmund’s on the final day, it reminds us of its ubiquity. It reminds us that we are all essentially flawed, and if we are then so is life itself.
