Lake District joy as double amputee boy, 8, reaches summit
An boy who had both of his legs amputated following horrific abuse as a baby at the hands of his birth parents has reached the summit of a famous Lake District fell. Inspirational Tony Hudgell, eight, successfully climbed Orrest Head, which boats views over Windermere.
Hoards of supporters turned out to line the route and cheer Tony up the fell, who was led to the summit by Cumbrian guide Steve Watts. Steve says Tony's achievements are the foundations of a "legacy". Steve told the BBC: "Talk about endeavour, willpower. For an eight-year-old? Follow that. How many more is he going to inspire? It's not just about the money, it's the legacy. It's opening the world to other children and other adults like Tony and Hari."
A charity in his name - the The Tony Hudgell Foundation has since been set up. It aims to support and strengthen the lives of children who have been affected by physical, emotional and psychological abuse.
