The group was initially saved by the Maltese-flagged bulk carrier Rimona in the Straits of Sicily, according to reports.Local public prosecutor Salvatore Vella said he had opened an investigation into the tragedy.
The survivors, originally from the Ivory Coast and Guinea, arrived in Lampedusa on Wednesday suffering from exhaustion and shock.He said: "What really struck us was the story of the tragedy."An hour later they were spotted by a helicopter, and an hour after that sighting, they were picked up by anTwo shipwrecks in the area were reported by the Italian coast guard on Sunday, but it is unclear whether it referred to the migrant's boat.
