The Woodland Trust has warned that a lack of legal protections for ancient trees means many are routinely felled or at risk of destruction and safeguards similar to those applied to historic buildings are urgently needed

The Woodland Trust said the absence of such legal safeguards for the UK’s oldest trees – some of which may be as ancient as 3,000 years of age – means they are being routinely, and more often than not legally, felled.

Jack Taylor, lead campaigner for the Woodland Trust, which is campaigning for new legal protections for the oldest trees, told: “Trees store carbon and are home to valuable wildlife, but they also hold the memories of people. The Sycamore Gap tree is a truly irreplaceable loss. Recent research suggests the number of ancient and veteran trees in Britain is grossly underestimated. While there are currently some 115,000 officially recorded across England, a study by Nottingham University last year found the true number could be as high as 2.1 million.
