'Didn’t like being amongst speculation that I was going to perform for something that really goes against my beliefs.’ Dua Lipa has said the World Cup being hosted in Qatar is a ‘unique opportunity’ to hold the country to account.

denied rumours that she was set to perform

, saying she looks forward to visiting Qatar ‘when it has fulfilled all the human rights pledges it made when it won the right to host the World Cup.’ Qatar has strict laws around homosexuality – it is illegal to be gay in the country and any same-sex sexual activity can be punishable by up to seven years in prison.

There has also been scrutiny around the deaths of hundreds of local workers who have spent the past decade building infrastructure to host millions of football fans during the six-week tournament.

Dua recently shut down rumours that she was set to perform at the World Cup in Qatar by saying: ‘There is currently a lot of speculation that I will be performing at the opening ceremony of the world cup in Qatar.
