DVLA workers will walk out in January in a strike aimed at worsening delays to the processing of driving licences for people with medical conditions.
Workers at the DVLA’s Birmingham office and those at the Swansea Morriston site who work to add medical conditions onto licences will walk out between 9 January and 13 January.outstanding driving licence applications on the desks of the DVLATwo-thirds of the applications yet to be dealt with were made by people with medical conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes, and heart problems, whose applications take longer to review.
The targeting of already-delayed medical licence processing is a strategic step by the Public and Commercial Services Union to hit the Government hardest during widespread civil service strikes,Tensions between the PCS – which represents civil servants – and the Government have been rising since industrial action was announced last month., Passport Office, driving examiners, and Job Centre staff, backed industrial action over pay, pensions, jobs and redundancy terms.
In a statement, the PCS said the “initial phase of our strike action” was targeted at “areas that will have a significant impact on employers’ operations and the government”.
