30 organisations have written to the Prime Minister calling for change
Campaigners are calling on the Government to implement a boost in Universal Credit payments. More than 30 organisations have written to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak amid concerns many people are struggling with essential costs including food and clothes.
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation says research has found 66 per cent of people think the basic rate of Universal Credit is too low, 67 per cent said they didn't think they would be able to afford the essentials if they were on Universal Credit, and 69 per cent back the idea of increasing the rate. The letter calling for an Essentials Guarantee law has been signed by 32 organisations including the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Trussell Trust, British Medical Association, NHS Confederation, Age UK, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, Asthma + Lung UK, British Association of Social Workers, Diabetes UK, Marie Curie, MIND and the Royal College of Nursing.
"Many conditions people present with, like asthma, are exacerbated by the poor state of their home, which should be a place of safety, which they cannot afford to maintain or even heat properly. Many of the people we help and care for say the stress and anxiety of getting behind on bills is taking a serious toll on their mental wellbeing."
Dr Nichola Ashby, deputy director for nursing at the Royal College of Nursing, said: "The Essentials Guarantee is an opportunity the government cannot miss to ensure everyone can afford to meet their basic needs."
