Here's what's in store
Benefit claimants across the country will see an increase in their payments from April as the new 2023/24 rates come into effect. The DWP is increasing benefit rates from next in line with September's inflation figure of 10.1%.As a result, thousands of people will receive more payment increases in the midst of a worsening cost of living crisis that will be compounded by rising utility bills and everyday goods. But for some, despite the increases, they will just be a few pounds better off.
What are deductions and what will they be? Money can be taken out of benefits to repay debts. This can include sums someone owes on rent, energy or water bills, council tax, unpaid fines, and child maintenance. Earlier this year, Citizens Advice Scotland estimated deductions from benefits could add up to an average of £62 per month from April, leaving people with just £3.50 extra.
