The Government department in charge of benefits responded to its workers’ vote to strike over pay by highlighting a scheme offering discounts on food shopping., the Department for Work and Pensions’ top civil servant wrote to staff saying he was “disappointed” but that he was determined “to do what we can to support you”.
This includes highlighting an improved offer of the employee discount scheme for food shopping and other household expenses. But it attracted criticism from the Public and Commercial Services union, which called the strike, and said the letter was “heartless” and “insensitive”., permanent secretary Peter Schofield told staff: “My executive team and I are determined to do what we can to support you.
“For example, we have renegotiated the contract to improve the offer available to colleagues through our employee discount scheme, which provides enhanced discounts for food shopping and other household expenses.understands Mr Schofield was highlighting the department’s longstanding employee discount scheme, which has been available to those employed in the Civil Service for years.
The mylifestyle scheme gives a range of discounts on things like insurance, experience days and shopping and is similar to other schemes in the public and private sector. He said: “To respond to a twelve-year pay freeze by saying ‘we’ve negotiated you a discount off a tin of beans’ is as heartless as it is insensitive.
