The number of people who have died as a result of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Turkey and Syria has surpassed 28,000

At least 12 people, including developers, have been arrested by Turkish police in connection with the deaths of people killed when buildings toppled.over the poor quality of developments in the earthquake-hit areas. Mr Erdoğan has promised that hundreds of thousands of earthquake-safe properties will be constructed within a year as part of a huge rebuilding programme.Experts have raised doubts over whether contractors adhered to regulations to ensure buildings could withstand earthquakes, with some blaming the scale of death and devastation on shoddy construction.
Turkey’s justice ministry has authorised around 150 local prosecutors’ offices to establish special earthquake investigation units to look into developers, surveyors and other key figures connected with buildings that collapsed, theState prosecutors in Adana ordered the detention of 62 people in an investigation into collapsed buildings, while prosecutors sought the arrest of 33 people in Diyarbakir for the same reason, the state-owned Anadolu news agency reported.
On Friday, a contractor for a block of luxury flats in Hatay province was detained at Istanbul airport on his way to Montenegro after his flight plans were uncovered, the agency reported.
