Council to debate motion calling for transfer of management of former military base as concerts row continues

Protests in Ebrington Square over the management of concerts and events are to be held every week, a protest group has said ahead of discussions to transfer the former military site to the local council.

The event was organised to continue applying pressure on all parties involved in the debacle over events in the Square. Cecil Doherty, one of the hotel owners, said in a BBC radio interview earlier this month that his business had "reserved our right to legal action" when information it requested around the events was not forthcoming but insisted the Ebrington Hotel does not object to events taking place in the public square.

The council is set to meet tomorrow afternoon, where it is understood Sinn Fein will introduce the motion. The spokesperson continued: "Our night time economy, in particular, as highlighted recently by Caolan 'Cartin' Cartin, Gary Curran and FreeTheNight, is failing to thrive particularly when compared to Belfast. There's a massive opportunity here, not just to make money, but to showcase Derry for what it is - a city with amazing talent and artistry. And to give local people a place and time to enjoy themselves. It's not a lot to ask'.
