Released almost ten years ago, the sci-fi epic did well at the box office and impressed critics. Is it time for a sequel?
riff never gets old; each new iteration of the same old day is used to advance the story in unexpected ways. As an audience we feel Cruise’s character’s frustration at being stuck, but we never share it. In the hands of a lesser director this could have resulted in cheap sci-fi. In Liman’s hands, everything is so well put together that we believe this world. It’s shabby, bloody, scrappy; at one point Cruise fights on top of a caravan, for god’s sake.

If it got to live its time again, it might have: it’s equally as thrilling as anything Ethan Hunt has ever done, but it looks better, the story is better, the acting is better, the set and costume and effects design is better. In a just world, Liman and Cruise would get their heads together and make plans to go again.
