Betty Gore was the wife of Candy's neighbour Allan, who Candy had been having an affair with. Betty died in her own home after being struck 41 times with an axe, and Candy was accused of killing her.
In the true story, Candy Montgomery was found"not guilty" by a jury at trial. She put forward that she had been forced to use the axe when Betty had attempted to use it against her, and the jury found that Candy had acted in self defence . Of course this is a side of the story that can be told. But the overall tapestry of the series could have been made richer by weaving in more threads, broadening its perspective., you rarely leave Candy's side. She is present in almost every frame, and Betty's story –life, feelings, desires – are explored mostly in the context of what they mean for Candy, and her own love affair with Betty's husband Allen.
What's more, Betty is largely defined by her experience of motherhood – from her initial desire to get pregnant, to her"moods" – making for a one-dimensional character who you're not invited to sympathise with, in the same way as you sometimes are with Candy.
