Elizabeth Qashou had always tried hard to keep her mouth in good order, so it came as a shock when she was told the news by her dentist
Elizabeth Qashou has always been a nervous patient when it comes to the dentist. But she had always done her best to look after her teeth, never missing a check-up, visiting the hygienist regularly and having treatments when needed.
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is an infection of the tissues that hold the teeth in place. This came as a surprise to Elizabeth, given her hygiene habits, as it's typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – to build up on the teeth and harden.
Recalling the moment she was told about the state of her teeth, the 64-year-old said: “It was extremely upsetting and a big shock to find out about my periodontal disease at such a late stage - especially as I had swapped to paying privately for my dental treatment. I was a regular patient who always had regular check-ups and three-monthly hygienist appointments so why had this happened to me?
“This whole experience and all the extra restorative dental work that has been required as a result of the dental errors has had a huge impact on my anxiety levels and really disrupted my day-to-day life,” she added. "Despite being a nervous dental patient, I always made an effort to attend regular appointments at the dentist and hygienist and tried to look after my teeth.
