She was surprised her publisher pushed it out so soon but I wasn’t: there’s nothing like experiencing the subject matter of a novel in real time, which is what happened when I re-read“And then this happened: Toward the end of June, Becka got the virus,” writes Strout about Lucy’s daughter. In fact, Strout writes about Lucy Barton’s interior life so well that some people can’t believe she isn’t mining a rich autobiographical seam to which she has yet to confess. She also peppers her characters with details taken from her own life, down to giving Lucy the same nickname, “Wizzle”, that her own mother gave her. But Strout has said she isn’t an autobiographical writer.
