Since Bauer Hockey's call for support of Hockey Canada, the corporate community's reception has been mixed at best. Many organizations remain skeptical about the direction of Hockey Canada — even after the appointment of a new president and CEO.
. “We will continue to provide on-ice product for Hockey Canada athletes as part of our partnership with the International Ice Hockey Federation, but our individual partnership with the federation has ended.”
Part of the board’s mandate was to find a new president and CEO, which they fulfilled by hiring Henderson. Even with Henderson poised to take over and a new board of directors in place, many of those politicians remain wary. In mid-April, St-Onge reinstated federal funding for Hockey Canada, but with major caveats, including forcing it to become a full-signatory to Abuse-Free Sport and the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner. A few weeks later, St-Onge announced new “safe sport” measures to improve accountability for all national sports organizations in Canada.
As a result of that revelation, several provincial bodies withheld their $3 per person registration fee that went to Hockey Canada for the 2022-23 season. In late October 2022, Hockey Canada announced it would not be collecting the $3 registration fee from any player for the entire 2022-23 season. “We are back in the position of being a partner with Hockey Canada to ensure that our responsibility is there to provide that fee. Our board has never taken a position contrary to that for next year,” said Phillip McKee, OHF executive director. “We are moving forward with paying our $3 assessment fee into the national body.”
