Chris Beesley spoke to Paul Tait following Everton's EFL Trophy defeat to Doncaster Rovers
Everton Under-21s coach Paul Tait has challenged his players to learn from the exploits of Tom Cannon and Stanley Mills in last season’s EFL Trophy after his young side fell to a 2-0 defeat at Doncaster Rovers in their opening group fixture.
Tait said: “If you speak to most Under-21s coaches and staff, they say we love this tournament because of what it does for the young players, it brings them on so much. I just used some of the lads from last season as an example for the younger boys tonight – the likes of Tom Cannon and Stanley Mills – they really blossomed last season and it gives them the confidence to go toe-to-toe with older, more-experienced players and it gives them that belief.
“I was delighted with the endeavour, the work-rate, the desire, which you have to show. You have to compete, you have to be really up for it when you play against men’s teams, which I thought we were.”
