Ministers believe a short pause in the ambulance and nursing strikes may offer the opportunity for new talks, but union insiders are sceptical 🔴Exclusive from janemerrick23
, the Royal College of Nursing has no new dates planned, while the next action by paramedics in England is not until 20 February.
While there is as yet no sign of a breakthrough, with ministers refusing to meet unions’ demands to negotiate pay for this financial year, the short pause in NHS strikes could provide an opportunity for both sides to step back and restart negotiations, ministers believe. But four weeks on, there has been no movement on this backdating plan – although Mr Sunak’s official spokesman suggested on Monday it was still on the table, when he said the government was still “considering proposals that have been put to us from the unions”.
“We have to be careful this is not just a sop,” a trade union source said. Another union insider said: “Everyone is exhausted. It is tiring. But this is about our members being paid enough so they can cope with the cost of living. People forget that that is the heart of it.”
