For those in the Hindu, Jain and Sikh communities celebrating Diwali around the world, this year it will be marked on Monday 24 October and celebrated over a traditional five day period.

According to the legend, Rama rescued his wife, Sita, from the evil king by building a bridge from India to Sri Lanka. On this first day, people buy new items such as jewellery, clothing and utensils and light lamps to welcome Lakshmi, according to India Today.
