The ex-Conservative donor and Boris Johnson ally, who was forced to quit as BBC chair in April after a damning review into his appointment, believes any successor will need to “think very carefully about the nature of the political environment”
that he quit because he “formed the view that I couldn’t do the job that I joined to do… I thought I could bring my existing experience to bear on the BBC, and you have to form a judgment as chair, can I remain effective?”
The ex-Tory donor also called the current licence fee “regressive” and suggested it could be replaced by a broadband tax. Mr Sharp said: “I would be in favour of a form of a mandatory payment. Currently the license fee, one issue is that it’s regressive.
