understood to include depictions of popular Disney characters including Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh and Baloo from theMr Kazadi, who arrived in the UK from the Congo aged 17, told: “I came to this country as a child having fled the kind of experiences no child should have to suffer.

“Small signs of kindness or welcome, and the opportunity to play and laugh, gave me the safe space I needed to recover. No matter where they come from or why they are here, all children deserve this safety and compassion. “Painting over the pictures of cartoons and animals in a reception centre, to communicate hostility to the children who arrive there, is an act of abject cruelty by this Government.“If only it would direct this energy into rebuilding anthat provides a welcoming and safe space for young people and children, where they can start to rebuild their lives.”

Insiders say that staff at the unit have so far failed to paint over the wall art, and that they were “horrified” about the command handed down by Mr Jenrick and were trying to think of ways to “avoid” it. Enver Solomon, CEO of the Refugee Council, said Mr Jenrick gave the order as he visited the Kent asylum intake unit earlier this year.with colourful branding, to make clear the centre was a “law enforcement environment” and “not a welcome centre” during the same visit, which took place in April or earlier this year.
