Major General Matthew Holmes, the former head of the Royal Marines, died by suicide after experiencing ‘substantial stress’, an inquest into his death has concluded.The inquest heard that in the months before his death, Maj Gen Holmes had lost his position as leader of the Royal Marines in a management restructuring.
He also faced the collapse of his marriage, and had been left ‘angry’ at the UK’s withdrawal from Afghanistan.She said that Fleet Commander Vice Admiral Jerry Kydd had told Maj Gen Holmes to agree to the restructuring, in which he would lose his role, or resign.She said that her husband found the experience ‘hugely humiliating’.After tours of Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan, the married father-of-two was appointed Commandant General Royal Marines in 2019.
He was also awarded a CBE the same year and was described as ‘one of our most senior and highly decorated Royal Marines’.including matters ‘relating to his marriage and his service career.’ After hearing of his death, his successor as Royal Marines head, Lieutenant General Rob Magowan, said: ‘My heart goes out to him and his family. We will honour him and all those closest to him.
