Now you know!

If you've eaten your last mince pie and are now looking around your home and thinking about taking down those decorations, stop. Some traditionalist swear that taking your Christmas tree, lights and decorations down on the wrong date could land you with a curse for the upcoming year. So, to avoid any chance of bad luck, here's the exact date you should banish those festive adornments back to where they came from.

According to tradition, there is a particular date to remove all that festive sparkle from your home. However, like all traditions there is an element of debate on this one. It is widely known among traditionalists that twelfth night is the time to pack everything away. However, when is twelfth night?

The twelfth night from Christmas day is January 5, which falls on a Thursday this year. Some, however, argue that the following day, January 6, known as 'The Feast of Epiphany' , is the right date to take down your decorations as it is the twelfth day following December 25.Confused? Well, twelfth night is a Christian festival - the eve of Epiphany.

Whichever date you decide is correct. Be aware that leaving your tree, tinsel and lights up any longer than this - or even taking them down before - is thought to bring bad luck for the new year. Now this bad luck superstition goes back hundreds of years, according to the Mirror, and stems from when it was believed that Christmas trees were home to spirits. These tree spirits were thought to be set free by people as they removed their festive tree from their homes in the first week of January.

Whatever you believe, or don't believe, by the first week of January you are probably getting a bit fed up of the additions to the decor of your home, so will want to start packing everything away ready for the 2023 festivities. But what if you forget to pack something away only to be discovered after twelfth night? Well, don't panic too much.
