The future of the Yorkshire accent and how it is changing
But with more external influences than ever will we sound like Gemma Collins or the Kardashians in 100 years? No, says accents expert Dr Chris Montgomery from the University of Sheffield.
So what is the explanation for this form of regional dialect levelling? Chris says: "People are more mobile. They communicate more and people [from elsewhere] move into the area." However, as accents and lexicons have always done over time, the variations of the Yorkshire accent will change. Many young working-class Londoners speak what has become known as 'Multicultural London English' which incorporates Caribbean and Asian as well as Cockney influences.
When a traditional farming population is displaced by affluent incomers the localised accent will, unsurprisingly, change. But Chris says the children of well-to-do incomers will develop their own manner of speaking which will differ from the traditional local accent and that of their parents.
