Brits should get used to power cuts during winter and make sure they’re prepared to live in the dark on the coldest days, an expert has said.

This could ‘certainly’ be something the country should come to expect in future winters,He said: ‘The coldest days are the most likely times when a blackout could occur, so it’s important to prepare and get used to the idea of potential power outages in the future.’

The commercial director, who specialises in energy management at the utility-training company, said families should ‘plan everything around the hours of a potential power cut’. This includes eating meals outside of a blackout and keeping a fully stocked stash of candles, matches and lighters. He said: ‘Torches in each room are important to keep, and if you have a log burner then stock up on lots of logs and coal.Families should make sure they have candles, matches, and lighters stocked up He predicts people will be asked to avoid high-usage items during peak times – between 4pm and 7pm.‘Snow is normally followed by a period of high pressure which means no wind, so wind farms wouldn’t be producing enough energy,’ he said.
