When Red Bull brought in Verstappen to switch from intermediate to slick tires at the end of Lap 11, it did not seem like the conventional strategy call.
Horner explained after the race that Red Bull was worried about Verstappen being undercut himself by Pierre Gasly and Fernando Alonso behind, meaning that by pitting him first, the team protected the 1-2 — just with the cars swapped — instead of risking being 1-4 on track. There was some sense to it.
Mercedes arrived at Zandvoort as one of the teams to watch, given its impressive showing at the Hungaroring last month — the two tracks bear similar characteristics. So to come away with just eight points for Lewis Hamilton’s sixth place will serve as a disappointing return. More was definitely on the cards with a better strategy call. Ferrari was not a points-scoring team this weekend, to be brutally honest. Red Bull, Mercedes, Aston Martin, McLaren, and maybe even Alpine and Williams all had quicker packages at Zandvoort, making Sainz’s fifth place something of a bonus. It’s a low in a season of highs and lows when what Ferrari really needs right now is a bit of consistency.
