“I am at last seeing a change in attitudes and the build-up of positive momentum.” Prince Charles addresses world leaders at the G20 on climate change, ahead of the COP26 summit. Get the latest climate news:
He tells G20 leaders in Rome:"COP26 begins in Glasgow tomorrow.
The private sector is"already there, eager to work with you and ready to play a hugely significant and game-changing role", he adds.Prince Charles says it's 'impossible' not to hear 'despairing voices of young people' on climate He told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show:"In terms of their NDC it moved forward somewhat from 2015 ... but of course we expected more.
Pressed on whether the climate summit could be a success without a net zero commitment from India, he said the onus was on G20 countries to reduce their carbon output."The G20 represents 80% of global emissions and that's why every country matters, but the G20 matters particularly."According to, France and the UK have been told to end their dispute over fishing or they run the risk of wrecking the climate summit.
But he warned we have"already lost the battle" as two world leaders are not attending the climate summit in Glasgow. He says it's not just the Marshall Islands that would disappear, but"very many other communities" would be affected, such as Bangladesh. He adds:"All of that we have to defend. It is a battle we just have to win."Questioned about the world leaders missing at COP26, such as Russian President Vladimir Putin or Chinese President Xi Jinping, he said"it would be much better if they were there".
He said the biggest mistake was to cut overseas aid, which he described as a"deeply immoral and unacceptable act".Tina Stege, a climate envoy for the Marshall Islands, warns that her nation can't survive if the 1.5C target isn't agreed. She told Trevor Phillips on Sunday on Sky News:"This is going to be a really tough two weeks. She said global warming beyond 1.5C is"unimaginable for my country", as it sits just 2m above sea level.
She said the COVID pandemic had taught the world that if you"protect the frontline, everyone is protected". "This is obviously a very big tough ask we've got here in Glasgow," the COP26 president says.
