Lancashire farmer blasts turkey shortage 'myth' before Christmas and blames 'big boys' for price war
A turkey farmer from Lancashire has hit back at claims of a turkey shortage before Christmas - and says a price war waged by the big boys against small farmers is actually to blame.
Similar inaccuracies were being bandied around about the shortage of eggs in supermarkets he said, which he claimed was actually down to price war with local farmers, while imported frozen turkeys were undercutting fresh local ones. “They're pushing people to cheaper lines so that they can still make the sales but not the fresh ones.” Things are ‘really tough’ due to skyrocketing bird feed costs, he added, and the scaremongering isn’t helping.
"We take great pride in how we take care of our birds, and there have been many sleepless nights. The coverage of the “shortage” has only further impacted us.
