Manchester’s Shambles Square has been an iconic part of the city’s history for decades but before 1971, the historic Sinclair’s Oyster Bar and The Old Wellington Inn were in a slightly different position.'s Old Shambles had to be “lifted”. The mammoth task involved raising Sinclair’s Oyster Bar and The Old Wellington Inn by around five feet, a project that would take months.
The raising of Shambles Square began on July 22, 1971, with the entire building being underpinned and lifted half an inch. By October 27, the building had been raised by five feet using hydraulic jacks - mission accomplished.The below photos show the remarkable efforts involved with lifting the Old Shambles and the workmen who achieved it. From getting hands on digging up the ground to operating the complicated machinery, it was certainly a tiresome and dangerous job.
