Sandra Duffy, speaking to Belfast Live, issued a direct appeal to 'any young person who is involved in any of this activity on the ground' to stop

Public disorder in Derry area may have "taken a more sinister turn in the last 24 hours", a councillor for the area has said.

Traditionally lit on August 15, a date marking the Catholic Feast of the Assumption and following closely on the August 9 anniversary of the introduction of internment in Northern Ireland in 1971, the bonfire materials had been gathered on land owned by the Stormont communities department. The PSNI said there were also reports that petrol bombs were thrown, a bus was hit with a brick, a local delivery van was attacked, an attempt was made to torch a van parked at a local playschool, as bins, tyres and pallets were dragged onto roads in the area and set ablaze.Join our new WhatsApp community today Click this link or scan the QR code to receive breaking news and top stories from Belfast Live.

"Galliagh is a really vibrant, positive community with so much good going on in terms of our community," she said.
