The striker had been a major doubt for the first clash of the Champions League group stage for the Hoops.
Feyenoord striker Ayase Ueda has declared himself fit for the Champions League group stage opener against Celtic amid the Dutch champions striker crisis.
But boss Arne Slot has slammed on the brakes of a return despite the Japan international telling his agent to push for a place in the starting line-up when the Scottish Premiership champions arrive in the Netherlands. Frontman Ueda picked up a knock while on international duty with Japan and missed the 6-1 Eredivise rout of Heerenveen while Slot will also be without first-choice striker Santiago Gimenez - who is suspended for the first two group Champions League stage games.
Rookie striker Calvin Stengs is the only fit and available striker for the Dutch champions going into their first clash in Europe's elite competition - but general manager Dennis te Kloese has revealed Ueda has made a play to start against the Hoops. Asked by EPSN if Ueda is fit for the clash he said: “He indeed has the intention, but he is also the only one within the club.
"He shouted to his agent last week 'I'm ready'. Opinions are somewhat divided about this and the medical staff in particular are not convinced at all. We didn't just sign him for this week. That boy is in custody for a longer period of time. He is a fantastic striker who will mean a lot to Feyenoord in the future.”
But boss Slot was quick to play down any chances of starting Ueda when put on the spot by ESPN declaring: “That is not a serious thought." It remains to be seen if the boss was keeping a pokerface before a late gamble when Celtic arrive on Tuesday."
