DRS zones could be shortened at certain tracks for 2023 to reduce a feeling of ease regarding overtakes. F1

Ultimately the plan is for Formula 1 to move away from needing the overtaking aid, the new regulations for 2022 seen as the first major step towards this goal with cars designed to allow drivers to follow more closely for longer, thus creating more overtaking chances.

“In some races, we may well need to actually reduce the DRS zones,” the FIA’s single seater technical director Nikolas Tombazis told“We don’t want overtaking to be, as we say, inevitable or actually easy. It still has to be a fight. He went on to suggest Monza, home of the Italian Grand Prix, as a venue which could benefit from shorter DRS zones.

“It’s not very impressive. And so we shouldn’t be afraid to reduce the use of DRS where it’s clearly proving to be too powerful.”Will Formula 1 ever reach the stage of ditching DRS? The stance is that these new 2022 regulations are effectively a building block for the direction to come in future years, 2026 marked as the year when we will see the next major regulatory changes as the new generation of power units are unleashed.
