Team USA will open the 2023 FIBA World Cup against New Zealand on Aug. 26 in the Philippines, according to results of the draw held for the quadrennial international tournament Saturday.
The Americans, the No. 2 team in the world according to FIBA rankings, will play Greece on Aug. 28 and Jordan on Aug. 30 to finish group play for the . Team USA is operating out of “Group C,” in Manila, in the 32-team tournament — the top two teams from each of the eight groups advance to the knockout stage.In place of Team USA’s customary spot atop the world rankings, Spain enters the tournament with the No. 1 seed. Spain usurped Team USA in the world ranking in November, a ranking system based on a weighted scale of international games played and won. Team USA had held the top spot since the rankings were created nearly 20 years ago.
