Firefighters 'making good progress' after blaze rips through derelict mill recently sold for £1.5m
An investigation is expected to be launched after a blaze ripped through a derelict mill building, sending huge quantities of smoke billowing out into the surrounding neighbourhood.
, a former flat complex, and council bosses in Trafford said they were 'aware of previous issues with unauthorised people accessing the site'. There have been no reports of any injuries. In February, both Empress Mill and the Trafford Press buildings, as part of the Orchard Point development site, were sold for £1.5 million at auction by commercial property auctioneers Acuitus. The 2.10-acre site was sold as a 'rare development opportunity', with historic planning consents granted for 200 flats and commercial accommodation.
A worker at a nearby business said: "I was here at about half six and it was well lit then. And I'm told it was even more well-lit before that. I couldn't see any flames but there was loads of smoke billowing out of the windows. A spokesperson for Trafford Council said: "Empress Mill is not a listed building. However, it is an important building within the Empress Conservation Area. It is this mill which was on fire this morning. Council planning and heritage officers have attended the site this morning alongside the structural engineer and are liaising with the police and the fire service.
