Officers believe it was a deliberate act
Fire crews from across the county were called to Northampton yesterday to tackle a huge field fire. Around 1,000sq m of grassland was scorched in what officers believe was a deliberate act.
In a rare occurrence, Chief Fire Officer for Northamptonshire, Darren Dovey, was one of the firefighters to help tackle the blaze. He had been at a nearby station when calls about the fire were coming into the control team.Crews from Mereway, Brixworth, The Mounts, Moulton and Wellingborough attended the scene. The area was cordoned off by Northamptonshire Police and residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed.
NFRS confirmed the fire was under control by 4.50pm, and that officers were dealing with isolated "hotspots." Residents were told they could open doors and windows if they wish, but the service recommend that people avoid the area. Chief Fire Officer Darren Dovey said: “I want to say a big thank you to the crews who attended. It was a massive effort by everyone in what were very challenging conditions with the heat and the wind.”
