Firefighters will rally today in an effort to save Glasgow's life-saving river rescue service
Emergency workers who serve on board the River Clyde’s only permanently crewed lifesaving rescue boat will hold a demonstration today.
Gathering at 11am in front of Glasgow’s Iconic “Squinty” Bridge, they will try to stop plans to scrap the 24-hour permanent coverage. The crew is currently based at Polmadie Fire Station and responds to incidents on the river but the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service isOver the past 12 months, the River Rescue Crew has made over 20 rescues from the Clyde.“Cutting the Clyde’s only permanent river rescue crew will unquestionably put the lives of Glaswegians and visitors to the city at risk and the plans must be halted immediately.
“We know that having a dedicated 24-hour service based at Polmadie has saved over 20 lives over the past 12 months - had the plans to cut the service been in place then each incident could have ended very differently.
