British nationals, embassy staff and Afghans who helped Nato forces are thought to be on board the plane.

People desperately fleeing the Taliban have touched down in the UK, after the first evacuation flight from Afghanistan arrived.

It comes amid chaotic scenes in Kabul, where thousands of people have desperately been trying to flee the Taliban, who have swept through the country and taken over. But there are fears that many people will not get out in time and that the Taliban could put an end to evacuations, with some comparing the situation to the USA’s departure from Saigon at the end of the Vietnam war.

In a tweet on Monday morning, the Ministry of Defence wrote: ‘Last night the first flight of British Nationals and Embassy Staff arrived at RAF Brize Norton as part of Op PITTING.supports HTML5 video‘The UK Armed Forces are supporting the evacuation of British Nationals and those eligible for relocation under the Afghan Relocation and Assistance Program.’
