Triathlon Ireland found the race was 'unsanctioned'.
It has since emergedand it confirmed an investigation is underway.
A friend Jim Shembri said: ‘I’m not sure how my first ride without you will go. I will have an espresso and ginger cookie in your memory though. I’ll never forget you my friend.’ He said: ‘The weather conditions changed quite quickly whenever we were getting into the water. It wasn’t so bad once you got through the waves.’
