The shark was found by researchers and local fishermen off the coast of Belize in Central America.
A shark has been found in the Caribbean 4000 miles away from the deep icy waters of the Arctic it normally inhabits, leaving marine scientists puzzled.
Devanshi Kasana, a PhD student at Florida International University, was part of the crew who were working alongside local fishermen when she realised that a fish on the end of their lines looked like a "rather sluggish creature". Kasana took a picture of the animal and sent it to her advisor, who said it appeared to be a Greenland shark, which was confirmed by experts.Top news stories today A fisherman on the boat, Omar Faux, said: "I am always excited to set my deep water line because I know there is stuff down there that we haven’t seen yet in Belize, but I never thought I would be catching a Greenland shark."
The findings were published in the Marine Biology journal. The rarely spotted half-blind Greenland shark is the longest-living vertebrate animal known, with some age estimates between 250 and 500 years old.
